The Metaverse Tribune January 2010 Musician Showcase Artist Phemie Alcott
Soulful and Engaging. These are the words that come to mind upon first hearing Phemie Alcott’s music. After the initial impression she takes you on a journey with subtle allure and a person can’t help but be drawn to the messages weaved into the melodic arrangements. It’s no surprise she’s the Metaverse Tribune’s December “Musician Showcase”, it also explains the 382 “phans” she has in-world in her group “Phemie’s phans”.
On contacting some of the members there were only words of praise and genuine affection for the singer. Phemie has been in Second Life since 2007 and has performed at countless venues in Second Life, singing originals as well as covers from “Winter” by Tori Amos to “Umbrella” by Rihanna. When asked what she considered her genre of music to be she answered, “My music is acoustic indie rock with a folk influence.”
Phemie’s been performing as long as she can remember, beginning with the piano in fifth grade and progressing to the amazing music she performs now, both in and out of Second Life. In an interview I had the opportunity to ask Phemie a few question which revealed a bit more of the singer, beyond the lyrics of her amazing music.
A: I will hear a melody in my head and play it out on guitar or keyboard and then put words to it or vice-versa. I will have lyrics and then just play around till something grabs me. Sometimes it all comes out at once as a whole song and those are the really special ones
.
How has your music evolved since you first began playing music? A: I listen to my heart more. It’s become more of an emotional outlet. I don’t care if it’s trendy or cool I just listen and write down what comes to me. Also, I am having more fun with my voice in quieter songs where I’m not wailing which is what I used to do in a band in the 90′s in RL.
A: I’d love to make albums and sell them online and maybe have the chance someday to tour a little. I’m not looking to be famous or be seen. I just want people to enjoy the music and hopefully it will touch them or make their day a little better. I want to share myself with people through my songs and make connections that I usually cant make through normal means.
There’s a quote that states “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” and Phemie Alcott has managed to do so not only in everyday life, but in Second Life as well.
