After the predictable pre-hype and well timed press leaks (oh those marketing gurus) Apple Computers™ the spin doctors of ”cool” in the world of technology have launched their latest product, the iPad™ tablet personal computer.
Is it just me, or does the revolutionary p.c. look suspiciously like an oversized version of the iphone? But there is no way that Apple Computers™ would launch a redundant product for the sake of boosting sales without offering some incredible features. Right?
Wrong.
The iPad™ features a 9.7 inch IPS LCD screen with back-lighting and a 132 pixel per inch resolution. The maximum weight of the iPad™ is 1.6 pounds for the upgraded 3G version. There is no Intel Inside™ this product, but rather a 1GHz chip made in house by Apple. It has a built in microphone, is Wi-Fi and 3G enabled and Bluetooth™ compatible.
But so is my cell phone. And like my cell phone, it cannot run a full version of Second Life on a 3G network. Something to ponder before we virtual citizens stampede to the Apple store.
An upgrade to the 3G version will cost you an extra $140, taking the retail price before taxes to almost $700 dollars. Before you fall in love with the 3G option, be aware that AT&T (the official launch partner of the iPad) is the only network available (I smell a monopoly attempt). The unlimited plan with AT&T will run you $29.99.
Not wanting to side with the uninformed cynics, I went online to read what tech experts are already saying about the iPad and some of its glaring deficiencies.
A great first attempt at introducing the concept of the net book personal computer, but in my opinion the iPad is little more than a “trophy wife”. Pretty to look at but entirely useless. There are always uninformed buyers. I am sure a few million will be sold.
But until they demonstrate that the iPad can do even 50% of what my MacBook Pro can do, I’m afraid that serious users will sit back and wait until you get it right, in about two or so years.

I’ll most likely hold off until they do fix the flash, multitasking, and camera issues. It does look like a great Ebook reader though, and Kindle isn’t cheap either.

I cannot single task on any pc. Even my BlackBerry allows for multiple applications to be open. They dropped the ball on that one big time.
I’ll own one eventually. Just not yet.
