So…Now a Money Obssesed Virtual World?

by Editorial Clarity | June 10, 2010 | One comment

Linden Lab, Laying of staff members this week, and has been the hot topic across the Second Life grid and various other places for the last 24 hours or so, and will most likely continue for the rest of the week.

My personal views, are, that yes, lay-offs can be a good thing for business, but now, im tired of coming into Second Life, and seeing it in my eyes, as a money obssesed Virtual World. I miss coming in and seeing the fun and creativity all the time. I see it as a money making place now, and that is sad.

There have been more problems with Second Life lately, with crashes, issues, complaints from residents, and, it is slowly pushing people away, even residents that have been in here for years! And it just doesn’t seem right!

I hope something get’s sorted very soon, and Second Life can just, atleast, be back to how it was just a little bit? I know times change, and I know people don’t like change, but, something has to be done, to not make it so money’fied.

Goodness, it’s been a money obsessed virtual world shortly after it officially left beta. I’m not saying that it is not still in beta by any means, but this has been going on since land became a commodity around 2004 and the rise of the ‘land barons’ who have reigned from then until land sales were again restructured 2009ish.

Speaking for myself (who else would let me speak for them?) I’ve gotten together with my SL partner on a private grid where we occupy six sims for…$40 euros a month. We split that fee between us, and we find that rather reasonable. Linden Labs is a company and they have to turn a profit to stay afloat. They seem to be doing so. With these layoffs it seems to me that the company is looking to go public. That would really be something to watch; that could change the world more than almost anything else.
