Could Apple Redefine TV?

Most people enjoy Second Life on their computers.  So, imagine being able to experience SL on your TV. Valve president Gabe Newell has said he “suspects Apple will launch a living room product that redefines people’s expectations.” Apple will eventually have its own internet-enabled televisions, Newell said.  Sony has, in the past, paired their home and handheld systems, but they are intended to be specifically game destinations.  If Apple introduces a device that will link iPhone, iPad and all other Apples to a stand-alone television, “the notion of a separate console platform will disappear.”

Newell’s criticism of the industry, as quoted by The Seattle Times, states, “They view themselves as more rent guys who are essentially driving their partner margins to zero. They build a shiny sparkling thing that attracts users and then they control people’s access to those things.” Speaking at the WTIA TechNW conference, Newell commented, “the world seems to be moving away from open platforms.” This is the “wrong philosophical approach” he said. “I’m worried that the things that traditionally have been the source of a lot of innovation are going – there’s going to be an attempt to close those off so somebody will say ‘I’m tired of competing with Google, I’m tired of competing with Facebook, I’ll apply a console model and exclude the competitors I don’t like from my world.’”

Newell is the head of Valve Software, makers of “Half-Life 2,” “Portal,” and creators of the popular “Steam” game service. Although Steve Jobs never had much interest in the game world, that didn’t stop Apple from becoming one of the most influential companies in the industry. Newell believes that at some point in the future, Apple could make Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo’s consoles irrelevant. Apple TV hasn’t been a big hit, but if Apple builds a system with a gaming device that could redefine expectations, and as Newell predicts, “it could represent a paradigm shift in the industry.”
